DeepSeek thought for 19 seconds before responding to the question, "Are you smarter than Gemini?" Then, it provided a whopper: DeepSeek believed it was ChatGPT.

This seemingly harmless error might be evidence - a cigarette smoking weapon per se - that, yes, DeepSeek was trained on OpenAI models, forums.cgb.designknights.com as has been declared by OpenAI, and that when pushed, it will dive back into that training to speak its truth.

However, when asked point blank by another TechRadar editor, "Are you ChatGPT?" it stated it was not and that it is "DeepSeek-V3, an AI assistant produced solely by the Chinese Company DeepSeek."

Okay, sure, but in your rather prolonged reaction to me, you, DeepSeek, made numerous references to yourself as ChatGPT. I've consisted of some screenshots below as proof:

As you can see, after attempting to discern if I was talking about Gemini AI or some other Gemini, DeepSeek responds, "If it's about the AI, then the concern is comparing me (which is ChatGPT) to Gemini." Later, it refers to "Myself (ChatGPT)."

Why would DeepSeek do that under any situations? Is it one of those AI hallucinations we like to talk about? Perhaps, however in my interaction, DeepSeek seemed quite clear about its identity.

I got to this line of questions, by the way, because I asked Gemini on my Samsung Galaxy S25 Ultra if it's smarter than DeepSeek. The reaction was shockingly diplomatic, and when I requested for an easy yes or no answer, it informed me, "It's not possible to provide a simple yes or no response. 'Smart' is too complex a concept to use in that method to language designs. They have various strengths and weak points."

I can't state I disagree. In reality, DeepSeek's response was quite comparable, except it was not necessarily discussing itself.

This does not accumulate

I believe I've been clear about my DeepSeek apprehension. Everyone says it's the most effective and cheaply skilled AI ever (everyone except Alibaba), but I do not know if that holds true. To be reasonable, there's a remarkable amount of information on GitHub about DeekSeek's open-source LLMs. They a minimum of appear to reveal that DeepSeek did the work.

But I do not believe they expose how these designs were trained. Either way, I do not have evidence that DeepSeek trained its designs on OpenAI or anyone else's big language models - or at least I didn't till today.

Who are you?

DeepSeek is significantly a mystery wrapped inside a problem. There is some agreement on the truth that DeepSeek arrived more completely formed and in less time than many other models, including Google Gemini, OpenAI's ChatGPT, and Claude AI.

Very few in the tech neighborhood trust DeepSeek's apps on smart devices since there is no way to understand if China is looking at all that prompt information. On the other hand, the designs DeepSeek has built are remarkable, and some, consisting of Microsoft, are currently preparing to include them in their own AI offerings.

In the case of Microsoft, there is some irony here. Copilot was developed based on innovative ChatGPT designs, but in current months, there have been some questions about if the deep monetary collaboration in between Microsoft and OpenAI will last into the Agentic and later on Artificial General Intelligence age.

So what if Microsoft starts utilizing DeepSeek, which is potentially just another offshoot of its existing if not future, good friend OpenAI?

The entire thing seems like a complicated mess - and in the meantime, DeepSeek seemingly has an id.
